WE-Cycle: A School Recycling Manual

Thanks to cafeteria and kitchen recycling pilots at Oak Tree Elementary and Val Vista Lakes Elementary in the 2013-2014 school year, Outreach staff was able to write a comprehensive recycling manual on implementing green programs in a school. Currently, recycling is FREE for schools who receive Town hauling services. The manual includes:

  • Introduction & Town Contacts
  • Why do it?
  • Who needs to be involved?
  • Establishing a Baseline
  • Setting Goals
  • What goes in?
  • What stays out?
  • Bin me! (What bins do I need?)
  • Opportunities for Recycling
  • Working with the Hauler
  • Supportive Services
  • Checking it out!
  • Definitions and Resources

With this information a school can start a very basic program, or take an existing one and make it into a powerhouse! The manual is designed for picking and choosing what the school wants; there is no need to implement all parts.

Schools that already receive Town hauling services were delivered desk side containers when the school was signed up. These bins are in large demand and new schools are constantly coming on board. Please be mindful of the Town resources by asking around the school first when requesting additional bins.

If there are any questions about bins or the manual, please email recycle@gilbertaz.gov!
