Audits

The Town of Gilbert Outreach staff is happy to help conduct an audit at a school, business, or residence as long as it is receiving Town hauling services. There are many benefits to conducting a waste audit, including:

  • Creating and providing a list of most commonly used materials in the school, business, or residence.
  • Reviewing options for recycling instead of landfilling.
  • Comparing costs between implementing a recycling program versus continuing to pay disposal fees. 
  • Identifying resources outside the bin, such as the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, to properly dispose of special items.

"My can was tagged!"

The Town of Gilbert is required to audit/inspect black and blue cans every month in order for the Town to stay compliant with Maricopa County regulations. You might see Town staff in your neighborhood inspecting cans and, if there was a concern, leaving behind a tag.

Blue Recycling Can Tag

Thank you for recycling and being a positive, eco-friendly influence in our Town!

The tag left on the recycling can should look like the image above. This indicates that there were contaminants found in the blue can. While the Town appreciates recyclables, the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) has a limited list of what can be accepted. This is for a number of reasons:

  • Some items are dangerous to workers. All materials placed in the blue can are touched by human hands at some point in the recycling process. This is one of the reasons bagged recyclables are not accepted: unknown contents. The only exception is shredded paper in a clear plastic bag. 
  • Some items have no current market value in Arizona. The point of recovering materials is to reuse materials, but if the material has no buyer, there is no reason to collect it.
  • Some items break the machinery. Plastic bags are the biggest concern for the MRF. They get caught in the mechanisms and the facility needs to shut down in order to clean out the machines.
  • Some items require a special recycling program. Household Hazardous Waste is a good example. While paint can be recycled in its own special process at the HHW Facility, it cannot be properly sorted and shipped at the MRF.

This blue tag serves as an educational reminder of what is accepted in the blue can program. If the contamination was severe enough the can could possibly not be serviced that day. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!

Black Trash Can Tag

The tag left on the trash can should look like the image above. Town Code 66.290, in compliance with Maricopa County regulations, requires ALL solid waste in refuse containers to be bagged and tied. This includes green waste (branches, grass, trimmings, etc.). Unbagged refuse may increase fly breeding and related health problems. Cans should not have their lid open, be overfilled, or contain bulky items. Large items damage equipment and may be dangerous for Town staff to remove.

This black tag serves as an educational reminder of the Town Code and Maricopa regulations. If the incident was severe enough the can could possibly not be serviced that day. Thank you for your compliance and understanding!
