COSMO DOG PARK

Current Activity: The park is officially reopen! Some ongoing maintenance activities near the lake are still happening, and you may see a slightly lower water level in the lake, crews working on-site, and certain areas marked with cones.

As part of the upcoming lake renovation at Freestone Park, the project team has developed a wildlife management plan in coordination with the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) to responsibly relocate and care for wildlife during construction.

Waterfowl: Ducks, geese, cormorants, herons, and other birds will naturally relocate to nearby waters during construction and are expected to return once the ponds are restored.

Fish: Sportfish and forage species (including bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, largemouth bass, and threadfin shad) will be collected and relocated to another water source within the Town of Gilbert, most likely Water Ranch or Gilbert Regional Park. Non-native or non-stocked species not approved for relocation will be humanely managed in accordance with AZGFD guidelines, with many donated to wildlife centers to support other animals. Over the past few months, the Town has stopped re-stocking fish at Freestone Park to minimize the number of fish in the lake in preparation for the project.

Turtles: Most turtles in the lake are invasive species and cannot be relocated to other waterways. A limited number may be accepted by a licensed Arizona reptile sanctuary; any remaining turtles will be humanely managed following AZGFD-approved protocols. The project team is working with Phoenix Herpetology Sanctuary on the relocation.

This relocation plan is being carried out under the guidance and protocols of the Arizona Game and Fish Department, ensuring wildlife is handled safely, responsibly, and in full compliance with state regulations. The Town remains committed to exercising the utmost care throughout this process and minimizing impacts to the habitat that makes this park unique.
