FAQs

How does Gilbert PD care for the well-being of their officers and staff?

Gilbert PD began its Peer Support and Wellness unit in 2018, aiming to provide officers and professional staff with resources, education, and assistance that focused on their physical, mental, financial, and spiritual well-being. The program has since evolved into a dedicated team comprised of a sergeant and two officers who together work to empower GPD employees to live happy and healthy lives on or off duty.

In Spring 2023, Gilbert PD added Finley, a three-year-old Goldendoodle to the Peer Support and Wellness team as a therapy dog.

Finley will work alongside his handler, Gilbert Peer Support and Wellness Officer McKay Lauritzen. “Finley will provide invaluable support and will be used in all areas of the department to help mitigate stress for our employees who are struggling with the occupational trauma and organizational stress that is associated with our profession,” said Officer Lauritzen.

How does Gilbert PD train for crisis situations like an active shooter?

In Spring 2023, every sworn member of the Gilbert Police Department underwent active shooter training at the former Neely Elementary School campus hosted by Gilbert PD’s SWAT Team. The training centered around crisis entry, with the primary goal of saving lives and eliminating any threat. By training in a realistic setting, officers were empowered with the confidence and expertise needed to protect our children and community when needed most.

Does Gilbert PD have a crisis response team?

In October 2022, the Gilbert Police Department launched its new Crisis Response Team, a unit dedicated to assisting people and connecting them with mental health resources. Gilbert PD’s CRT, one of the first of its kind in the east valley, is made up of four police officers and a sergeant with specialized training in crisis intervention, de-escalation tactics, and crisis negotiations.
What are high risk stops and when are they conducted?

As part of our Get to Know Gilbert PD series, Sergeant Campbell breaks down the training our police recruits go through at our academy to conduct high risk traffic stops.

Examples of when high risk traffic stops are conducted include situations where individuals are believed to be armed and dangerous, such as armed robberies or carjackings.
How does Gilbert PD train its officers on de-escalation and how to reduce the use of force?

With the opening of Gilbert's Public Safety Training Facility, Gilbert PD and Gilbert Fire & Rescue have access to state-of-the-art facilities and technology to conduct their training. Part of Gilbert PD's training includes the use of VirTra, simulation technology that offers Gilbert Police officers training based on real life scenarios they may encounter that allows them to practice de-escalation tactics and to how to reduce the use of force.
What is Gilbert PD doing to add more women to its police force?

The Gilbert Police Department is committed to diversifying its organization to better match the demographics of the supportive citizenry it serves. A large component of this mission is increasing the number of female police officers who work for the Town of Gilbert. The Gilbert Police Department has joined the 30X30 initiative, a pledge to increase the amount of female police officers by 30% by the year 2030. What are you doing to increase your diversity within your department?

The Gilbert Police Department is committed to embracing diversity and inclusion as we strive to become the workforce of the future. We recognize we have room for improvement in this critical area and are actively evaluating our recruitment and hiring practices to identify opportunities where we can better demonstrate our desire to be welcoming and all-inclusive.

The Gilbert Police Department participates in community events year-round and throughout the valley, not just to build both trust and positive relationships with our community, but as a means to recruit future employees. Each interaction with the public is a valuable opportunity to educate those interested in pursuing a career with us about our department and mission. These events are hosted by government agencies, non-profit organizations, religious organizations, educational organizations, chambers of commerce, and local businesses.

Additionally, GPD routinely participates in recruiting events and career fairs throughout the valley and state. We have also participated in recruiting events hosted by the military at various bases throughout the state and country.

Building Community Relationships

Do you engage with organizations in your community meant to improve the relationships between law enforcement and minority groups? If so, how often?

The Gilbert Police Department participates in community events year-round and throughout the valley. These events are hosted by the police department, government agencies, non-profit organizations, religious organizations, educational organizations, chambers of commerce, and businesses.

We treat each interaction as an opportunity to build relationships between the community and the police department. These are opportunities to build trust, transparency and to educate each other.

The Gilbert Police Department holds a quarterly “Chief’s Community Forum”. These forums provide an opportunity to meet with the community to discuss issues related to law enforcement and the community. The forum currently consists of members from the following organizations: Chabad Jewish Center of Gilbert; Gilbert Chamber of Commerce; East Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens; Dignity Health; Banner Health; East Valley MLK Committee; East Valley NAACP; Gilbert Public Schools; Higley Unified School District; Chandler Unified School District; Arizona Muslim Police Advisory Board; Town of Gilbert; Central Christian Church; Evident Life Church; Holy Trinity Community AME Church; New Beginnings Christian Church; Anti-Defamation League; Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; and local community activists and leaders.

Gilbert Police Department hosts at least one community engagement event each month. These events are open to the public and held for a couple of hours at Gilbert businesses. These open houses provide opportunities for community members to speak to police officers and learn about job opportunities, volunteer opportunities, crime prevention and as an opportunity to ask questions.

Commitment to Continously Improve

We are committed to continuing to assess our policies and procedures to ensure they are up to the high standards that our community expects from us. We are committed to working with our community to build relationships, increase transparency and developing trust amongst everyone in our community. Diversity Committee

The Gilbert Police Department values the diversity of our community and our employees. The Chief of Police hosts quarterly community meetings to help facilitate transparency between the Police Department and the community in which we serve. The Police Department facilitates and participates in numerous meetings throughout the year to help build relationships and open lines of communication. Participants represent our diverse community, including, but not limited to members representing the following communities: Faith-based; Disabled; African-American; Arab; Asian; Hispanic; Native American Indian; Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ); and representatives from our Schools; Hospitals; Businesses; and Non-Profit Organizations.

What does CompStat stand for?

What are UCR statistics and how are they used?

The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program compiles crime information from more than 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the United States who voluntarily report their data. Crimes are reported underneath two categories: part I and part II offenses.

Part I offense classifications include the violent crimes of criminal homicide, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, and the property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.

Less serious offenses not listed above are classified as part II crimes.

UCR data is used by law enforcement agencies in a number of ways, including to help address crime trends, for resource allocation, budgeting, planning purposes and more.

*As of January 1, 2021, the FBI officially retired the collection of crime data through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program’s traditional Summary Reporting System (SRS). The FBI has encouraged a nationwide implementation of the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) in each agency as it enhances the overall quality of crime data collected by law enforcement.

As of 2008, the Gilbert Police Department has been certified in reporting NIBRS data and was recertified in 2022.
