About Zanjero Park
Zanjero Park is a 20 acre park located on the East side of Lindsay Rd just south of the Loop 202 freeway. The park is a converted water retention basin and opened on April 19, 2008. The primary use of the park is for horseback riding which has almost a mile of horseback riding trails with hitching post and water troughs. The park also contains a multi-use trail that links up to the San Tan Trail.
Where are the burrowing owls?
In partnership with ADOT, construction has started on the Lindsay Rd. interchange and the burrowing owls have been permanently relocated by Wild at Heart, a raptor rescue organization. All of the owls have been relocated safely and humanely at this time. The old burrows will be covered and retired. Burrowing owls live underground and need a lot of open space; they tend to live in agricultural areas. With this area expanding rapidly, it was determined that they would need to be removed in order to protect the species.
According to the Wild at Heart website, “Captured owls are cared for by WAH volunteers for a minimum of 90 days: 60 days at the WAH facility, and another 30 days at the new relocation site. This transitional period is necessary to break the owls’ bond with their former habitat.” The owls are currently located at this facility and Wild at Heart is working with other local organizations to find permanent homes for them.
Wild at Heart specializes in this this type of relocation and has received regional and national recognition for what they’ve done to help maintain the species.
