About

On October 18, 1988 Gilbert voters approved the construction of McQueen District Park through the Parks, Recreation Facilities, open Space and Storm Water Improvement Bond Election. Originally the site was configured to accommodate the future construction of an elementary school. Through a cooperative land swap agreement with the Gilbert Public Schools the property became a choice location for a 40 acre district park. In September 1996 a master plan was designed to complete the project in three phases. The McQueen Park Activity Center opened in 1997, McQueen Park Ball fields Phase II opened in 1996 and the Town celebrated the grand opening of the final phase, McQueen phase III, on October 16, 2004.

Phase I
Phase II
Phase III included adding a gym to the activity center and 21 acres of open space plus the addition of four youth ball field, two multiuse trails, multiuse fields, 2 acre lake and 3 lakeside ramadas.

The school to the north is Playa del Ray and a contest was created to involved the students in naming the three lakeside ramadas. Students learned about riparian wildlife and were able to color their favorite riparian scene with their name submittal. The ramadas were named based on their winning submittals of Mallard Landing, Heron Haven and Eagles Nest.

Through a cooperative agreement, McQueen Phase III was awarded $252,431 from the Arizona State Parks Heritage Fund to assist with construction costs.
