With the growth of the Gilbert Fire Department and the celebration of its move to its new administrative facilities, the desire for a new ceremonial arm of the department was recognized.
This led to the creation of the Gilbert Fire Department Honor Guard in 2003. The goal of the honor guard is to serve the community and the fire department as a visual reminder of the service and traditions of the fire service. It accomplishes this mission through the presentation of the colors for various holidays, at important ceremonies, and at funerals and memorials.
Pipe and Drum Band
The Gilbert Pipe and Drum Band was formed to continue tradition within the fire service. In the 1800’s Irish immigrants could not apply for many jobs, but they were allowed to apply within police and fire. In those days it was not uncommon for many fireman to die in the line of duty. During these funerals the bagpipes were played as they would be at a typical Irish funeral. This tradition has evolved to be a solemn tribute at all firefighter and police funerals.
Today the Gilbert Pipe and Drum Band play for many events around the Town and State not just for funerals. The members also are part of the Arizona Fire Service Pipe and Drum Band; a band of all the combined fire departments around the state. Participation in the Pipe and Drum Band is voluntary and is made up of members of the community in addition to our Gilbert Fire and Rescue personnel.
