Preparing For Extreme Heat:

  • Learn to recognize the signs of heat illness.
  • Identify places in the community where you can go to cool down and hydrate such as libraries, community centers, and shopping malls. Click here for Maricopa County's interactive map of cooling centers and hydration stations across the Valley.
  • Cover windows with drapes and/or shades.
  • Install window air-conditioners and insulate around them.
  • If you are unable to afford your cooling costs, weatherization or energy-related home repairs, contact the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for help.

Be Safe During Extreme Heat:

  • Limit your activity outside to the early mornings and late evenings.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day and not just when you are thirsty.
  • Wear light weight, light colored, loose fitting clothing.
  • Wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Protect yourself with a sun screen that has a SPF of 15 or higher.
  • Stay cool inside an Air-conditioned building.
  • Use your oven less to reduce the temperature in the home.
  • NEVER leave children or pets inside a car even in cool temperatures.
  • Consider pet safety. If they are outside, make sure they have plenty of cool water and access to comfortable shade. Asphalt and dark pavement can be very hot to your pet’s feet.
  • Seek medical attention or call 9-1-1 if you are experiencing Heat Cramps, Heat Exhaustion, or Heat Stroke.
