About the Program

The Day of Service to Seniors is a quarterly community initiative organized by the Town of Gilbert. Each quarter, volunteers of all ages come together to assist Gilbert senior residents who, due to limited financial resources and/or physical limitations, need support with basic household services. Our goal is simple: to help neighbors live safely and comfortably in their own homes.

Who Can Apply

Eligible Residents

The program is open to Gilbert residents who meet the following criteria:

  • You are a Gilbert resident
  • You are experiencing difficulty completing basic household tasks due to a physical limitation, disability, or age-related challenge
  •  You have limited financial resources that prevent you from hiring outside help
  • You are 60 years of age or older — OR — you have a qualifying physical limitation regardless of age

Types of Assistance Available

Residents may request help with the following services. Please note that all projects are light-duty only and are subject to volunteer availability:

Outdoor Yardwork:

  • Lawn mowing
  • Pulling weeds
  • Trash and recycling bin assistance

Indoor Housework / Cleaning:

  • Mopping
  • Vacuuming
  • Dusting

Note: Volunteers cannot perform structural repairs, heavy lifting, electrical/plumbing work, or other specialized tasks.

How to Apply as a Resident

If you or someone you know could benefit from this program, please follow these steps:

1.     Review the eligibility requirements above to confirm you qualify.

2.     Submit your application during the open application window for your desired service day (see schedule below).

3.     In your application, describe the specific tasks you need help with (indoor, outdoor, or both).

4.     You will be contacted after the application window closes to confirm your placement and provide details for Service Day.

Applications received after the close date cannot be guaranteed placement for that service day, but may be considered for the following quarter.

What to Expect on Service Day

A team of volunteers will arrive at your home during the scheduled service window on the day of the event.

  • All volunteers are screened and supervised by program staff.
  • Please ensure the areas to be worked on are accessible and free of hazards before volunteers arrive.
  • A program coordinator will be available by phone throughout the event if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Volunteers will do their best to complete all requested tasks within the available time.

Annual Event Schedule (2026–2027)

The Day of Service to Seniors occurs four times per year.  The fall date coincides with the 9/11 Day of Service in collaboration with Just Serve.

The Summer Day of Service only accepts indoor projects.

Applications open three months before each Service Day and close two weeks prior. Plan ahead — spots are limited!
