If I’m using the medical exemption to not wear a mask, do I need a doctor’s note?

No, face coverings are exempt for those who cannot wear a face covering due to a medical or behavioral condition.

Do I have to wear a mask while exercising outdoors?

No, face coverings are exempt in settings where it is not practical or feasible, including while exercising. However, safe social distancing should be maintained even while exercising.

Do I have to wear a mask while exercising indoors at a gym or group class setting?

No, face coverings are exempt in settings where it is not practical or feasible, including while exercising. However, safe social distancing should be maintained even while exercising.

Do I have to wear a mask at a park?

Cloth face coverings are required at parks if you’re unable to maintain 6 feet of distance from other people outside of your household. When exercising or playing a sport, masks are not required but physical distancing is expected. Children 6 years are under are not required to wear face coverings.

Do I have to wear a mask when I’m on a walk?

You only have to wear a face covering if you’re walking in an area where you can’t maintain 6 feet of distance from others.

Do I have to wear a mask in the pool?

No, face coverings are exempt in settings where it is not practical or feasible to wear a face covering, including swimming. However, safe social distancing should be maintained even while swimming.

Do I have to wear a mask while participating in a Parks and Recreation program?

Yes, as of June 19th at 5 PM, face coverings are required at indoor or outdoor places where persons are unable to maintain safe physical distancing (six or more feet separation) from others not of their own household. In settings where it is not practical or feasible to wear a face covering, it will not be required, including while exercising.

Do kids have to wear masks?

Anyone ages 6 and up will be required to wear a face covering when they are unable to main safe social distancing from others.

Do kids have to wear masks at school?

Yes. Masks are required at schools when it’s not possible to maintain 6 feet of distance from other. This applies to children who are 6 years or older. Please check with your children’s school for additional guidance.

Do I have to wear a mask when I’m on my own property?

No. You do not need to wear a mask on your own property. It’s still recommended that you wear a mask if you aren’t able to maintain 6 feet of distance between others who are not from your own household.

Do I have to wear a mask while shopping in stores?

As of June 19th at 5 PM, face coverings are required at indoor or outdoor places where persons are unable to maintain safe physical distancing (six or more feet separation) from others not of their own household. So, you should wear a mask while shopping unless you are able to maintain safe physical distancing.

Do I have to wear a mask in a taxi, ride share or public transit?

Yes, as of June 19th at 5 PM, face coverings are required at indoor or outdoor places where persons are unable to maintain safe physical distancing (six or more feet separation) from others not of their own household. Please check with ride share service on specific policies.

Do I have to wear a mask while going through a drive thru?

Yes, because you will be within 6 feet of the cashier.

Am I required to wear a mask at a hair salon / barber shop?

Yes. According to Governor Ducey’s Executive Order 2020-34, barbers and cosmetologists must “establish and implement protocols and best practices for businesses to address COVID-19, including using face coverings for employees and customers”.

Are face coverings required in restaurants and bars?

As of June 19th at 5 PM, face coverings are required at indoor or outdoor places where persons are unable to maintain safe physical distancing (six or more feet separation) from others not of their own household. So, you should wear a mask while in a restaurant or bar unless you are able to maintain safe physical distancing. You will not have to wear a mask while you are dining.

Do I have to wear a mask inside a restaurant while I’m waiting to be seated?

As of June 19th at 5 PM, face coverings are required at indoor or outdoor places where persons are unable to maintain safe physical distancing (six or more feet separation) from others not of their own household. So, you should wear a mask inside a restaurant while you are waiting to be seating unless you are able to maintain safe physical distancing.

Are face coverings required in churches?

The use of face coverings and maintaining safe physical distancing from others not of their own household while attending Church services is strongly recommended.

What are the penalties for violating the mask order? How will the police department be enforcing the order?

In accordance with the Emergency Order, Gilbert Police will not be enforcing the face covering requirement and there will be no penalties. We will be assisting with educating the community about the order through various means.

If you have concerns about a business or individual not abiding by the order, you may contact our police non-emergency line at (480) 503-6500 or report the issue using Gilbert 311. While Gilbert Police are not able to respond to all calls for service regarding mask-wearing, we will do our best to educate on the benefits of wearing a face covering to help slow the spread of COVID-19. 

What about those that conceal carry? Can they be penalized for wearing a mask?

Arizona law does not prohibit a person from carrying a firearm and wearing a face covering. If a person commits a crime while armed and their face is covered, this can be an aggravating factor in the criminal charge.

What about people who can’t afford to buy a mask?

Simple cloth face coverings can be made at home from a bandana, an old t-shirt or cotton cloth. Learn how from the CDC: glbrt.is/ClothFaceCoverings. For those who don’t have household items available, you can request help at glbrt.is/HELPR.

Where can I purchase a cloth face covering?

Masks and other face coverings are now available at several major retail stores as well as from local vendors here in Gilbert. We would suggest reaching out to a few of your favorite stores to see if they carry them.

How long will it be required to wear face masks?

The Emergency Order will remain in effect through Sunday, July 19th at 5PM unless modified or rescinded.
