Joe Rodriquez currently serves as the Commander of the San Tan Patrol Division of the Gilbert Police Department. The division includes patrol responsibilities for the southern part of the Town, south of Ray Road. He also oversees the Traffic Section, including Day Motor units, Night DUI Traffic Units, Traffic Reconstruction Detectives, 3511 Tow Program and the Civilian Patrol Technicians. Other duties include overseeing School Resource Officers and the Property and Evidence Division. He comes to Gilbert after a 24-year career with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, serving over ten of those years in command and executive command positions. He retired in December of 2017 as the Captain over the SWAT Division, Aviation Division and Extradition Unit.
During his 24-year law enforcement career with the Sheriff's Office he has served in a variety of capacities. Joe started his law enforcement career as a new deputy sheriff patrolling the southeast portions of Maricopa County to include unincorporated areas surrounding Gilbert and Chandler. He rose through the ranks, eventually holding command positions in the SWAT Division, Town of El Mirage, Town of Fountain Hills, Lake Patrol Division and an executive command position as the Deputy Chief over the Patrol Bureau, covering all of Maricopa County.
He received his BA Degree in Communications from the University of Hawaii in 1992 and an AGS Degree in Law Enforcement Technology from Rio Salado Community College in 1993, upon completing the Police Academy. He is a graduate of Class #1 of the Leadership in Police Organizations Academy here in Arizona.
Joe is a native Arizonan growing up in the small town of Globe, Arizona, and was a 22-year resident of Gilbert where he raised his three kids and spent numerous hours as a volunteer coach for Gilbert American Little League, Gilbert Youth Basketball, and Higley High School baseball.
Joe is current member of the Fountain Hills Drug Coalition. East Valley Chiefs of Police Association (EVCPA), Arizona Chiefs of Police Association (AACOP), International Association of the Chiefs of Police (IACP) and is a past member of the National Police Canine Association and the Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association.
