Assistant Chief Jeff Thompson oversees the Gilbert Police Department Patrol Divisions, Criminal Investigations Division, Support Services Division, and Professional Standards. He has been a Gilbert resident since 2002.

Assistant Chief Thompson retired from the Mesa Police Department after serving 22 years. Assistant Chief Thompson retired as the Commander of the Special Operations Division where he oversaw the Gang Investigations Section, Organized Crime Section, Major Offender Section, and the Tactical Team Section. In addition, the Special Operations Division was engaged with three multi-agency task forces comprised of local, state and federal law enforcement personnel including the ATF, FBI, and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Prior to his assignment with the Special Operations Division, Assistant Chief Thompson was assigned to the Superstition Division, which is the largest of four patrol divisions in the City of Mesa with a population over 163,000 residents and growing. In addition to a diverse residential and commercial community, the Superstition Division is home to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. During his assignment, Assistant Chief Thompson decreased Part 1 crimes by 19%, increased Part 1 arrests by 12%, increased officer initiated activity by 26% and reduced overtime by 29%. Assistant Chief Thompson also served as the Commander for the Criminal Investigations and Professional Standards Divisions during his tenure.  

Assistant Chief Thompson has a diverse background in law enforcement and worked in various assignments to include Patrol, Narcotics, Intelligence, Traffic, Human Resources, Operations, Internal Affairs and Investigations. Assistant Chief Thompson holds a Master Degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University and a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice / Spanish from Wayne State College.
