Gilbert, Ariz. — The Town of Gilbert has officially proclaimed September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, reaffirming its commitment to mental health, hope, and community support. In alignment with the proclamation, the Gilbert Police Department aims to raise awareness around suicide prevention, promote crisis resources, and spotlight the work of the department’s specialized Crisis Response Team (CRT).

According to the Arizona Suicide Prevention Coalition (ASPC), Arizona continues to face rising suicide rates, reaching 19.22 per 100,000 residents in 2023, underscoring the urgent need for early intervention, education, and accessible support. Suicidal thoughts can affect individuals of any age, background, or gender.

“The Town’s proclamation reinforces our shared responsibility as a community,” said Assistant Chief Garza, Gilbert Police Department. “Suicide affects many people, and it takes a community to help with prevention. By recognizing warning signs, having honest conversations, and connecting people to supportive resources, we can save lives.”

Gilbert Police Department Crisis Response Team (CRT)

The CRT consists of four officers and a sergeant trained in crisis intervention, de‑escalation, and crisis negotiations. They respond to in‑progress calls involving mental health needs and work alongside individuals to provide immediate support, encourage follow‑up, and connect them with ongoing care. The team also partners with agencies that support veterans, homeless individuals, those experiencing long‑term mental health challenges, and other vulnerable populations.

Residents seeking support or guidance can contact the CRT at CRT@gilbertaz.gov.
