Gilbert, Ariz. - As part of broader efforts to safeguard the community's water supply, Gilbert is converting decorative turf at five municipal parks to water-efficient landscaping through a $3 million state grant. The initiative will save approximately 3.9 million gallons of water annually while creating attractive, functional park spaces.
The turf being removed through this project is decorative grass—areas that aren’t actively used for play or gatherings but still require significant water. Recreational lawns and sports fields, which support activities like sports, games, and community gatherings, will remain available for residents to enjoy year-round.
Addressing Water Challenges
In response to ongoing challenges from historic drought, climate change, and increased demand on the Colorado River, Gilbert has initiated Stage One of its Water Supply Reduction Management Plan. This proactive approach focuses on reducing municipal water consumption and inspiring voluntary conservation throughout the community.
The Town was awarded a $3 million grant from the Water Conservation Grant Fund, administered by the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority (WIFA), to convert turf areas to water-efficient xeriscape landscaping at five park locations by June 2026:
- Cactus Yards
- Cosmo Dog Park
- Crossroads District Park
- Freestone District Park
- Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch
Significant Water Savings
These projects will remove over 130,000 square feet of decorative grass from municipal park areas. With an estimated 30 gallons of water saved per square foot removed, the completed sites are projected to conserve approximately 3.9 million gallons annually, contributing directly to Gilbert's Colorado River conservation commitment.
Beautiful and Functional Xeriscape
The converted park areas will feature low-water-use shade trees, shrubs, and groundcover, complemented by amenities such as ramadas, benches, and lighting. These updates create inviting spaces where families can gather, neighbors can meet, and the community can enjoy the outdoors, all while conserving water.
These changes reflect Gilbert’s approach to balancing sustainability with community enjoyment, showing how careful planning can protect the water supply while continuing to prioritize recreational fields and spaces where residents gather and play.
Rebates Available for Residents
