Gilbert Far Exceeds Goal in Collection of Meals for the United Food Bank
Gilbert, Ariz. - The United Food Bank was overwhelmed with donations today thanks to the Gilbert Feeding Families Community Food Drive. This month-long fundraiser included various events and activities to raise food and monetary donations for families in need. It was proclaimed a success at Thursday’s weigh-in event as the community exceeded their goal of raising 72,600 meals by raising 114,586 meals. The 72,600 meal goal was set to coincide with Gilbert’s 72.6 miles.
“This is the vibrancy of the community,” said Mayor John Lewis. “This is where the community comes together and those that have had great vision each year, you help us extend and move forward.”
Gilbert Feeding Families raised more than half of the 167,075 total meals the United Food Bank provides to Gilbert each year.
A Bag-off competition, the KMLE Country flagpole fundraiser, and a pre-school can drive competition were some of the key events that helped motivate residents to donate and have fun. Several business partners also gave generously to the cause.
The Gilbert Feeding Families Food Drive started four years ago when it raised more than one thousand meals. This year’s drive raised about one hundred times more.
