Gilbert PoliceGilbert, Ariz. - On June 28th, Officers responded to a welfare call of a pet bird located in a home, which was reportedly abandoned in the 500 East Block of Leah Lane.  Upon entry into the home, officers discovered a dead body in a bedroom of the home. Gilbert Police Detectives assumed investigation of the case.  There are no indicators at this point the death is a result of an act of violence.  The body will be transferred to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine cause of death.

6/29/14 Update:
The deceased in this case has not yet been identified. The condition the body was found in indicates it had been deceased for a long period of time.  Additional details are pending victim identification, family notification and manner of death.

7/01/14 Update:
Investigators met with the homeowner, Janet Pallone Delatorre (60).  Delatorre told investigators the body found in the home was that of her mother who passed away in September of 2010.  She told investigators she did not report the death because the conditions of the house were so bad she was afraid she would be accused of elder abuse or neglect.  According to Delatorre’s statements, her mother would have been 95 years old at the time of her death.

The Gilbert Police Department has yet to verify the information provided by Janet and the medical examiner has not identified the body as of this time.  If the information provided by Delatorre is determined to be factual the possibility exists she could be charged with failing to report the death pursuant to ARS 11-593, a class 2 misdemeanor.

This case remains an active ongoing investigation.
