green-recycling-symbolGilbert, Ariz. - Have you ever wondered what to do with your extra plastic bags?  If you're looking for a way to recycle them and you want to help the environment, elementary schools in Gilbert are being asked to join a unique recycling campaign that will turn donated plastic bags into building materials for useful products such as park benches.

The “Bench the Bag” campaign, spearheaded by the East Valley Recycling Alliance, will take place in Gilbert from February 1 through March 31, during which time elementary schools are being asked to collect plastic bags from students.  At the completion of the drive, the collected bags will be weighed and the school that with the most bags will receive a park bench made by Trex, a company that produces wood-composite decking and railing products out of the recycled bags.

There are very few options for recycling plastic bags as they are not allowed in blue barrels because they get caught in recycling machinery.
Various types of plastic bags can be recylced including grocery, department store, dry cleaning, bread, produce and Ziploc bags. Newspaper sleeves and paper towel plastic over-wrap will also be accepted. All bags must be clean, with no paper or leftover food inside.

Interested Gilbert elementary schools must register by January 20.  Please contact Gilbert’s Environmental Outreach Specialists at (480) 503-6459 or via email at for an enrollment form or additional information.
