Gilbert Fire Welcomes New Arson Detection Dog

Post Date:01/15/2020 2:01 PM

Gilbert, Ariz. – The Gilbert Fire & Rescue Department (GFRD) is excited to welcome a new member to their team, Zeta, the department’s new Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) arson detection dog. Zeta came to GFRD last month after a six-week training course in Virginia with her handler, fire investigator David Zehring, and ATF.

Zeta’s job is to alert on evidence in suspected arson fires. She is the only ATF accelerant detection canine in Arizona and in a partnership with ATF, Zeta can be deployed for national callouts.

Zeta takes over after Spring, GFRD’s former arson detection dog, retired this past fall after serving Gilbert for seven years. Spring is currently enjoying retirement with her new sibling, Zeta, by her side.
