Gilbert Police Officer Sponsors Student Guitar Club

Post Date:12/02/2019 8:00 AM

Gilbert, Ariz.- Gilbert Police officer Paul Alaniz spends his days patrolling the halls of Williams Field High School as a School Resource Officer (SRO) but after hours, he can be found jamming on his guitar with students, sharing his skills as the club sponsor.

He studied music in college and now shares his passion with students, creating not only a place to play guitar, but a community where students feel like they belong.

“When I was a kid, I didn’t have an outlet,” said Alaniz. “I found an outlet through guitar and that was a passion and a diversion for me.”

With the help of a few other faculty members with hidden talents, Alaniz has been able to share that passion.  Vice Principal Daniel Fox says Alaniz goes above and beyond.

“He’s unique not only for his musical ability,” he said, “but he’s unique in that he cares incredibly about every single one of these kids on our campus.”

Alaniz says all of the Gilbert SROs strive to build relationships and make an impact in students’ lives.

“We try to cultivate more than just the police officer mentality,” he said. “They’re able to talk to us anytime without any reservation, and this guitar has been the greatest for building that bridge.”
