Gilbert Firefighters Spread Kindness Through Pen Pal Program

Post Date:04/24/2019 8:00 AM
Gilbert, Ariz.- Gilbert Fire & Rescue firefighters are spreading kindness through a pen pal program, going above and beyond the call of duty to build trust amongst children in the community.
The Friend a Firefighter program connects 51 Gilbert firefighters with kindergartners. The children write letters thanking firefighters for their service and firefighters write back, often including gifts like badge stickers, helmets, and school supplies.
“One of the best parts of the job that we have is to make that connection with young kids so they can have role models to look up to,” said Gisa Puailoa, a participating firefighter.
The program not only spreads kindness in the community, it also bolsters enthusiasm for learning in the classroom.
“When they get to open up a letter, they’re excited to read,” said Amy Dudley, a teacher at Gilbert Christian Schools, “and they are very excited to get out pen and paper and write back to their firefighter. So, it’s very engaging and it’s fun.”
