2017 Gilbert Water Conservation Report

Post Date:01/04/2018 2:00 PM

Gilbert, Ariz.- As one year ends and another begins, we like to tally up all those water drops that Gilbert residents, staff, HOAs, businesses, and churches worked hard to save over the past year.

The numbers for 2017 are in, and we have a lot to be proud of! In 2017, Gilbert’s water conservation efforts collectively saved over 342 million gallons of water. That’s 7 days’ worth of Gilbert’s water demand.

How did we do it? Let’s take a look at the year in review:gilbert water conservation in 2017

  • 21 million gallons saved by residents. There were 422 households that took advantage of a free Water Efficiency Checkup. A Checkup saves a resident, on average, 50,000 gallons of water a year.
  • 54 million gallons saved by Gilbert staff and contractors who manage landscape irrigation at parks, street medians, and town facilities. They achieve this by making monthly irrigation adjustments to reflect plant water needs, promptly fixing leaks, and utilizing water efficient technology at municipal sites.
  • 190 million gallons saved by 55 Homeowners Associations and apartment complexes that monitor their landscape irrigation and aim to water as close to their customized water budget as possible (a water budget tells them how much water the common area landscape actually needs, month by month).
  • 15 million gallons saved by 64 businesses and churches who receive leak alerts, assistance monitoring landscape irrigation, and installation of smart irrigation technology at their sites.
  • 62 million gallons saved by new commercial and residential development. Through the appropriate use of lawn areas and the installation of water efficient and desert-adapted landscaping, new development in Gilbert saves water.

What else? In addition to our activities with direct water savings, we also educated the community through:

  • 1,788 Gilbert Public Schools 4th graders participating in the 6th Annual Gilbert Water Festival
  • 905 Gilbert 6th graders received an in-class, technology-focused water efficiency lesson
  • 2,332 Gilbert 4th graders received an in-class water conservation lesson
  • 479 attendees in the spring and fall residential landscape workshops, to help people save water and money in their yard. Roughly 65% of the water Gilbert treats to drinking water standards is used outdoors on landscapes.

We all know that water is precious here in the desert. You can do your part to save water.
