Readers may recall that, in 2005, the Town approved millions of dollars in taxpayer funds to build a world class baseball, soccer, softball and special event complex at Gilbert’s Elliot District Park. We fundamentally believe that high quality recreation and sport opportunities for youth and adults increases the vitality of our community. It’s also part of who we are as a family-friendly, healthy Town. Unfortunately, Big League Dreams, the company who held the maintenance and operating agreement for more than nine years has not held up their end of the deal.
Our job is to protect the investment our citizens have made in this park and we believe in being friendly, firm and fair in all of our interactions. We have attempted to work with Big League Dreams over many years to find resolution to the challenges that have plagued this park at the same time insisting that Big League Dreams make good on their promises to Gilbert taxpayers. We have lost confidence in Big League Dreams ability to maintain the park and honor their commitments to the Town and so we have taken action as a Town Council to terminate the contract.
Gilbert is a growing and thriving community. We were just ranked the most prosperous city in the country! So many great companies and residents call Gilbert home and we are proud of the quality of our community. In contrast, continuing to partner with Big League Dreams is a risk with little reward. This facility needs a different team; an operator with common sense, motivation, and integrity. A team that believes in the Gilbert way.
We will continue to make the necessary repairs and improvements to provide a safe, world class facility and sports complex that our residents and businesses can be proud to have in Gilbert. I look forward to the day that we can reopen a safe and sensible field of dreams.
