Frequently Asked Questions
- Will the Town install a stop sign at an intersection in our neighborhood to slow drivers down?
- What about installing more speed limit signs in our neighborhood?
- How does the Town decide where to install traffic signals?

Can our neighborhood streets have speed bumps installed to slow drivers down?
The
Town will not place speed bumps on any public street. However, there is
a slight variation of the speed bump that is called a speed hump.
Speed humps can be safely traversed at 20mph. This is 5 mph below the
speed limit in residential areas. They have shown to be effective in many
cases.
Residents are responsible for the cost of permitting, planning installing signing, and marking the traffic calming device(s). Town Staff will provide a full cost estimate of the amount due for he installations(s), including the type of device which may include a Road Kop speed cushion or approved equal, asphalt or other approved device(s).
If your neighborhood is interested, please fill out the Request for Neighborhood Traffic Mitigation form.
What else can we do to slow traffic down?
Unfortunately, we have very little control over every driver in the Town of Gilbert. Two other tools we have are spot enforcement and the Town's radar trailer.
At the request of a citizen, the Police Department will send an officer to patrol a particular location. Contact the police department (480) 503-6500 or go to the Submit a Tip webpage and provide them with:
- Your location of concern (and be specific!)
- The best time to patrol (again, be specific)
Good example: "Please have an officer stationed along Maple Drive near the elementary school between 5:00-5:30pm.
Poor example: "Have an officer anywhere on Maple Drive any time during the day.
You can also request the Town radar trailer. It is a self-contained radar and large display that shows drivers their speed. It is not a photo radar device. It does not issue tickets. It is mainly used for educational purposes. To request the trailer for your neighborhood, call traffic enforcement at (480) 503-6518.
How can we get the Town to address our neighborhood traffic concerns?
To request a study of traffic concerns in your neighborhood, complete the Request for Neighborhood Traffic Mitigation form and return it to the Town of Gilbert Traffic Engineering Department.
