VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR THE WALK FOR WATER SAFETY 4/30
Gilbert is looking for help spreading the word throughout our communtiy about drowning prevention. Help us reach 6,500 homes this year in the April 30 walk. Water safety bags will be distributed with tips that will help us keep our kids safe around water.
Help us spread the word.
CLIP IT: WATER SAFETY CHECK
Never leave a child out of supervisory eye contact in or near pool, not even for a second. Assign an adult to be a “designated water watcher” that watches the children in the pool. There is absolutely no substitute for constant adult supervision. If you must leave the pool area, take your child with you.
· Always keep a cell phone outside when swimming in case of an emergency
· Do not place objects like chairs or tables near the pool or spa fence that could allow a youngster to climb over or fall in.
· Keep toys, particularly tricycles, away from the pool. A child playing with these could accidentally fall into the water.
· Never leave children unattended around places where water can pose a threat: Bathtubs, toilets, ponds, canals, 5-gallon buckets, any area of open water.
· Secure pools with fencing and self-latching gates.
· Learn Continuous Chest Compressions. CPR instruction is available from a variety of sources. Check your yellow pages under first aid for available classes.

GILBERT FIRE OFFICIAL EXPLAINS WHY WE ALL NEED A "WATER CHECK UP"
Summer is quickly approaching, and it is the time to remember that even the best of parents can – and have – faced a tragedy involving a pool and their child.
As the weather warms, I ask each and every one of us, parent or not, to take a moment and undergo a simple “water safety check list,” to review our water safety plans for the summer, and remind ourselves that we can never be too diligent as we enjoy these coming summer months.

WORK ZONE SAFETY
Gilbert saw 73 collisions inside work zones in 2010 - a number we can all work together to make zero. One of our most admirable traits, points out Mayor John Lewis, is our safety - and that includes inside work zones. Remember to drive the speed limit and to watch out for people and changes. We can all set the example:

SUPPORT THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS WITH THE TORCH RUN THURSDAY, 4/21
The main purpose of the Law Enforcement Torch Run is to raise money and awareness in support of the 10,600 Special Olympic athletes who train and compete year-round in Arizona. It is through these efforts, and many more, that make it possible for the athletes and their families to receive the level of support they do.
