Smile: You're driving a safe speed

GILBERT ALL SMILES ABOUT SAFE DRIVING IN SCHOOL ZONES

Gilbert has installed four new “driver feedback signs” at two local schools, with new technology that gives drivers positive feedback in the form of a smiley face when they are driving at or below the speed limit.

Learn why it works.

HERO'S TRIBUTE: LT. ERIC SHUHANDLER

Dozens gathered on January 28 to honor three heroes killed in the line of duty within Gilbert's boundaries. The date marked the first anniversary of the death of Lt. Eric Shuhandler, a beloved 16-year Gilbert Police veteran who was shot and killed while protecting our community.

An historic marker was unveiled in a grassy area, just south of Baseline Road on Val Vista Drive, where residents can remember his sacrifice for our community, and honor his memory. Fellow officers one by one saluted the blue sign after recalling his light sense of humor, dedication to his daughters, and love for serving and protecting us.

Also honored with an historic marker placed along Gilbert Road in the downtown Heritage District was Officer Rob Targosz, who died on April 30, 2006, after an impaired motorist struck him in Tempe while on duty.

Scottsdale Sgt. Tom Hontz was also honored for his sacrifice made on behalf of our Town. Hontz was tragically killed during a training exercise that took place in Gilbert.

Look for the announcement of a new tribute page in honor of our local heroes in the next edition.
