ALTERNATIVES TO OVERSEEDING:

Many HOAs don't require overseeding in the winter, particularly in the front yard. That makes it a good time to consider alternative projects that could help save you on your utility bill, and improve the beauty of your lawn. Some examples include irrigation maintenance, pruning and weed-pulling, placing a new layer of organic mulch around plants, seeding a wildflower area and planting or upgrading new landscaping.

INNOVATIVE SOLAR PROGRAM WILL CUT UTILITY COSTS

The Gilbert Town Council has approved a solar power purchase agreement in a move to support a unique and innovative project that will use solar energy to power the Neely Wastewater Reclamation Plant. The project, a partnership with SPG Solar, will generate about 44 percent of the electrical needs for the facility, and will offer Gilbert taxpayers reduced utility costs at the facility. The solar panels will be located over the beds now used to recharge water back into underground aquifers. The $10 million solar project will be constructed at no cost to taxpayers and SPG Solar will be responsible for maintanence. The purchase agreement is expected to allow the Town to receive a 20-year fixed price for the utility

RECYCLE FROM HOME: Gilbert is helping Town residents to divert reusable green waste – such as grass, leaves and even lettuce – by composting it at home and using as soil. The Town provides free compost bins, made from recycled materials, to residents interested in helping reuse and recycle green waste. The effort also helps save costs of delivering reusable green waste to landfills.

Water Wise Plants

CALLIANDRA (FAIRY DUSTER): The name calliandra refers to the beautiful stamens which make up the tufted or ball-like flowers. Their colors, ranging from pale pink through deep red, are indeed beautiful. These small to medium sized shrubs produce their flowers against a backdrop of finely divided, lacy-looking foliage. Calliandras can be used in a wide variety of landscape situations. Fairy dusters are a natural for wildlife gardens, adding a bright spot of color and a food source for hummingbirds.
