OFFICER RACES TO THE TOP:

Gilbert Police Officer Rob Griffin is preparing to compete this month in the US National Championship in Granby, Colo., as well as the Western State Police and Fire Games. Griffin took home four first place trophies in the recent Arizona Police and Fire Games, including the Triple Crown for having the fastest speed in the mountain bike race, road race and time trail event. Griffin has been an avid mountain biker for 13 years, and won a national championship the same week he tested to become a police officer. He uses the sport to stay active and healthy. For results in his upcoming games, check back in.

STAY WATER SAFE

Summer is in full swing and it is vitally important that we all remain alert when our children are around water.

- Never leave a child out of supervisory eye contact in or near a pool.
- Do not place objects like chairs or tables near the pool or spa fence.
- Keep toys away from the pool.
- Secure pools with fencing and self-latching gates.
- Learn Continuous Chest Compressions

SUMMER VACATION SAFETY TIPS

Leaving for Vacation? Don’t forget to plan for Home Security. It is important to give the illusion that someone is home.  Residential burglars enter a property when they believe no one is there.  To give this illusion, place lights and a transistor radio on timers.  Tune the radio onto a talk-show, turn the volume up loud enough so that you are able to hear it while standing outside your front door.

Next, it is important to consider not only making it more difficult for a property criminal to enter, but also making it more difficult for them to get the property out. To do this, you need to make certain that you have locked all of your doors and windows, padlocked your side gates.  Disengage your electronic garage door device and place a padlock on the inside track while the door is closed.

Also make certain you are not posting information about your “upcoming” vacation on any social media sites such as: Facebook or My Space.  Do not leave information or voice messages (even if for work) that you will be “out-of-town”, but rather that you will be “away from the office."  Notify a friend, relative or trusted neighbor that you’ll be away and leave contact phone numbers with them in case they need to reach you.  If possible, have the trusted friend, relative and neighbor make certain that your mail and newspapers are picked up daily and have them move your vehicles around in the driveway.

And finally, check with your local police department to find out if they have a Vacation Watch Program. It is a good way to not only keep a watchful eye out on your property, but also a great way to notify the police that you will be away if an emergency should arise.

For questions about the Gilbert Police Department’s Vacation Watch Program you can call go to our website or call the Gilbert Police Department at (480)503-6500.
