Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) Program

The Gilbert Police Department provides the opportunity for citizens to volunteer in a variety of areas within the police department. The mission of the Gilbert Police Department Volunteers In Police Service is to support members in providing police service and to promote community partnership.

· Must be 18 years of age, 21 for Citizens on Patrol and Crisis Support Team.
· Furnish a copy of your high school diploma or G.E.D., and birth certificate.
· Have a valid driver's license or other ID.
· Successfully pass an extensive interview, background investigation, polygraph examination and drug- screen
· Complete orientation training before being accepted into the program.

· Administrative Volunteer (positions available): Administrative Volunteers help PD Administrative Assistants throughout the department with data entry, filing, making copies, and providing assistance as needed.

· Alarm Coordinator Assistant (no positions currently available): Volunteer will provide Alarm Coordinator with clerical assistance in implementing Alarm ordinance. Duties include data entry, filing, and mailing.

· Chaplain (no positions currently available): Volunteer Chaplains are certified or ordained, have at least three years experience, and the endorsement of a church or ecclesiastical superior for service. Chaplains provide services to Police employees. They respond to traumatic incidents involving law enforcement and provide support to PD employees on scene as well as affected Gilbert residents.

· Citizens on Patrol Volunteer (positions available): Volunteer will patrol specific neighborhoods, issue parking citations, motorist assist, patrol special events and be available for call-out to major crime scenes. Citizens on Patrol volunteers also assist officers at traffic accidents providing help as needed and respond to low-priority calls when able. Extensive training provided.

· Communications (positions available): Volunteers assist Communications/Dispatch by pulling audio requests and completing the validation process for information entered into ACJIS.

· Crime Analysis Volunteer (no positions currently available): Volunteer will assist Crime Analyst with various statistical reviews/reports. Applicants must be certified or working towards certification.

· Crime Prevention Volunteer (positions available): Volunteer will assist the Crime Prevention Specialists with community projects and activities. They manage a table or booth, providing information to the public regarding crime prevention and safety.

· Crisis Support Team (positions available): Volunteer will provide support to victims of traumatic events or crime (usually at the scene) upon request of the police or fire department. Types of support include: crisis intervention, grief support, referral to resources, child-care, etc. The Crisis Support Team provides relief to PD Youth & Adult Resources counselors by going to scenes counselors would otherwise be asked to respond to. Extensive training provided.

· Detention Fingerprinting Volunteer (positions available): Volunteer provides assistance to traffic officers during their busiest time period. Volunteer fingerprints arrestees and helps with paperwork on Friday and Saturday nights.

· Detention Transport Volunteer (no positions currently available): Citizens on Patrol volunteers may receive special training to become a Detention Transport Volunteer. The volunteer responds to calls for transport of an arrestee and, with the assistance of an officer, provides transportation to the Central station.

· DUI Volunteer and Van Driver (no positions currently available): Volunteer will assist officers with processing drivers suspected of DUI by filling out paperwork or fingerprinting arrestees; a volunteer may be asked to drive the DUI van to the location of a DUI Task Force.

· Fingerprinting Volunteer (positions available): Volunteer assists with court-ordered fingerprinting at Gilbert PD sub-station. The volunteer will complete paperwork as well as provide fingerprinting services.

· Fleet Volunteer (positions available): Volunteer will assist with the fleet; taking cruisers to be washed, calibrated, or relocated. The volunteer provides help at the request of PD Service Aides.

· Property/Evidence Volunteer (no positions currently available): Volunteer will run errands, assist in moving or handling evidence, stock and inventory items. The volunteer will also provide office assistance by typing and filing.

· Rangemaster/Armorer Volunteer (no positions currently available): Volunteer assists Rangemaster with data entry. Information for issuing and repairing guns, rifles, and Tasers is entered, as well as inventory information.

· Records Volunteer (positions available): Volunteer assists Records by logging requests, filing and providing file maintenance, and performing OnBase imaging and prepping.

· Training Volunteer (no positions currently available): Volunteer will assist Training Coordinator with a variety of duties including typing, filing, and organization of departmental training records. Training manuals and hand-outs are prepared as needed.

· Warrants (positions available): Volunteers use a monthly report to obtain information about recently issued warrants and make phone calls to notify the individual of the warrant.

· Youth & Adult Resources Volunteer (positions available): General volunteers provide clerical assistance to front office staff and the volunteer coordinator; counseling volunteers are masters-level volunteers who provide additional counseling services within the section.
