Explorers

Today, young adults have a great opportunity to participate in a program that can make their career decision easier and help them prepare for their future.

Through the Gilbert Police Department's gracious acceptance of the Police Explorer Program and their continued assistance, the Gilbert Police Explorers are exemplifying that Gilbert is a "Community of Excellence" and hope to make the youth of today not only better cops but better people.

The Gilbert Police Explorer Post is currently recruiting young men and women who are interested in a law enforcement career. On top of all the hours of service to the community and the department, the Explorers also receive police training.

Benefits in participating in the Explorer Program

  1. The youth develop better police relations and communication skills
  2. The community is given a better outlook on the youth.

Training times

Every Tuesday, the Gilbert Police Explorers receive training from 6:00pm to approximately 8:00pm.

This training covers nearly all aspects of police work ranging from traffic stops to domestic violence and also develops personal skills such as discipline, respect, and confidence. One of the ways that all of this training is put to the test, is by Explorer competitions. These competitions utilize different aspects of their training as well as team work. Through the years, the Gilbert Police Explorer Post #912 has consistently proven their level of excellence at various competitions always striving for perfection.

History
The Explorer Program is the young adult division of the Boy Scouts of America. The roots of the Explorer Program reach back nearly 75 years to the Sea Scout Program. It is the purpose of the Law Enforcement branch of the Explorer Program to educate and involve youth in police operations, to interest them in possible law enforcement careers and to build mutual understanding. There are now many Explorer Programs that provide training and leadership in the following:
  • Businesses
  • Industries
  • Churches
  • Schools
  • Government agencies
  • Professional societies
  • Civic clubs
  • Labor unions
  • Sports clubs
  • Community organizations

The Gilbert Police Department implemented an Explorer Program in March of 1989 to benefit youth and the community. Through the years, the Gilbert Police Explorer Post #912 has developed into an intrical part of the Gilbert Police Department by their commitment to specific areas of the Police Department.

One of these areas is their work with the Crime Prevention Unit. With a community primarily based upon housing, the Gilbert Police Department places an enormous emphasis on crime prevention in neighborhoods.

With department budget limitations, it's not always feasible to send the necessary officers to weekly neighborhood block programs to answer all questions and provide crime prevention information. To relieve this growing demand, the Gilbert Police Explorer Program volunteers hundreds of man hours each month along with the Gilbert Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit; supplying neighborhoods with information and services.
