2012 General Election Information

The Town of Gilbert will hold a General Election on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 for the purpose of a runoff for one Councilmember position.

Voter Registration

To vote in the General Election, residents must be registered with Maricopa County Elections by October 9, 2012.

Voter registration forms are available at the following Town locations:

  • • Gilbert Municipal Center, 50 East Civic Center Drive, Gilbert, Arizona
  • • Southeast Regional Library, 775 North Greenfield Road, Gilbert, Arizona

Early Voting, By Mail

Registered voters may request a ballot by mail, by phone, or by linking to the Maricopa County Elections website.

Phone requests for ballots may be made by contacting the Town Clerk's Office (480) 503-6871 or Maricopa County Elections at (602) 506-1511. Persons requesting a ballot over the phone need to provide their name and address, date of birth, and voter identification number (if available).

Early Voting, In Person

Persons who wish to cast an early ballot may do so at the Gilbert Municipal Center, 50 East Civic Center Drive, Gilbert, Arizona, beginning October 11, 2012 and ending November 1, 2012. Early ballots may be cast Monday through Thursday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Early ballots may also be cast at the Gilbert Municipal Center on Saturday, October 20, 2012, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Election Day Information

Polls will be open on Election Day, November 6, 2012 from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Persons in line at 7:00 p.m. will be permitted to cast a ballot.

Voter Registration, Early Ballots, and Permanent Early Voting List

The Maricopa County Recorder Links outside of Town of Gilbert website is responsible for voter registration records. To be qualified to register to vote and vote in Gilbert elections, you must be:

  1. A citizen of the United States.
  2. Will be eighteen years of age or more on or before the date of the regular general election next following his registration.
  3. Will have been a resident of the Town twenty-nine days next preceding the election.
  4. Is able to write his name or make his mark, unless prevented from so doing by physical disability.
  5. Has not been convicted of treason or a felony, unless restored to civil rights.
  6. Has not been adjudicated an incapacitated person

Elections

Beginning in 2012, Gilbert's regularly scheduled elections will be held in the fall of even numbered years (August and November).

  • · Primary Election is held on the tenth Tuesday before the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November
  • · General Election is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

The Council, or under certain circumstances the Clerk, may also call special elections, when needed, in accordance with State Law.

Elections are conducted in accordance with the Arizona Revised Statutes, Titles 16 and 19 Links outside of Town of Gilbert website and the Code of Gilbert, Chapter 26. Links outside of Town of Gilbert website

The Mayor and Council serve at-large, representing all citizens. The Mayor and Council serve four year terms; there are no term limits and members can be elected to consecutive terms of office. Gilbert municipal elections are non-partisan.

The Code of Gilbert, Chapter 26 Elections, Section 26-1. Qualifications of candidates, states:

  • All candidates for elected office in the town shall be qualified electors of the town. Candidates shall have resided in the town for at least one year preceding the election in which he is running, except that a person living in an area that has been annexed into the town during the year preceding the election shall be qualified if he has resided in that annexed area at least one year prior to the election.

Election results for prior elections are currently not available on the website and may be obtained from the Clerk's Office. These documents can be requested by email or by submitting a public records request.

Political Committees

Political Committees must file a Statement of Organization and file Campaign Finance Reports with the Clerk in accordance with the Arizona Revised Statutes, Title 16, Chapter 6, Campaign Contributions. Independent Expenditures

A.S.R.S §16-914.02 Links outside of Town of Gilbert website allows for reporting of independent expenditures of corporations, limited liability companies and labor organizations.

Political Signs

Political signs may be subject to disclosure requirements found in the Arizona Revised Statutes, Title 16. Links outside of Town of Gilbert website

Gilbert's sign regulations are contained within the Land Development Code, Section 4.402I: Political Signs. Political Signs do not require a sign permit. There may be additional regulations on signs in the Land Development Code. Questions on signage regulations contained in the Land Development Code should be directed to Code Compliance at 503-6879.
