Street Sweepers

Between July 1st 2009 to June 30th 2010, we swept over 44,500 miles of roadway in Gilbert. Our goal is to sweep the main roadways and residential streets at least twice a month. However, unpredictable priorities, such as storm debris removal after a major storm event, can alter the schedule temporarily.

The first crew sweeps the main roadways from 4:00am - 12:30pm. A second crew goes into the subdivisions to sweep from 5:30am - 2:00pm to avoid delaying rush hour traffic.

What you can do to help in residential areas:
  • Keep young children and pets away from the street sweeping vehicles
  • Bulk trash (uncontained waste) should not be placed in the street
  • As soon as practical, move your trash cans back onto your property after they have been emptied
  • Do not blow landscaping debris into the street
  • Prevent soil erosion from landscaped areas from entering the street
  • Do not back wash your pool to the street
Streets and parking lots comprise a significant portion of the total impervious area (non-absorbing) within urban areas, like Gilbert. A large percentage, if not the entire area, of streets and parking lots are usually directly connected to the storm drain system. Street sweeping not only improves the appearance of the neighborhood, it also removes a large amount of debris and sediment that could have been washed into the storm drainage system.

The Town uses environmentally efficient street sweepers. These sweepers reduce the amount of dust that can be "thrown up" into the air by normal street sweepers. The dirt and debris collected from the roadways eventually end up in the landfill.
