Buckland, Ken

Commander Kenny Buckland has 21 ½ years of experience in law enforcement.  He began his service as a police officer with the City of Prescott in 1992.  In 1995, after more than three years with the City of Prescott, Kenny applied for and was hired by the Town of Gilbert Police Department, where he is still employed. On July 2, 2007, Kenny was promoted to the rank of Police Commander.

Kenny has held numerous assignments including Uniformed Patrol, Bike Patrol, Field Training Officer, Recruit Training Officer, Advanced Officer Trainer, Lead Officer, Patrol Sergeant, Special Investigations Sergeant, Traffic Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, Special Operations Lieutenant, SWAT Commander, East Valley DUI Task Force Co-Coordinator and Public Information Officer (PIO), San Tan Division Commander and Special Operations Commander.  He has held several certifications including general instructor, physical fitness instructor, defensive tactics instructor, RIPP Restraint and Sudden Custody Death Syndrome (SCDS) instructor, Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), Clandestine Laboratory Site Safety Officer and Responder, and Incident Command.

Kenny’s education includes a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University, graduating with Distinction, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Northern Arizona University.  In 2005, Kenny received 24 credit hours from Northwestern University after completion of the 10 week School of Police Staff and Command.  On September 17, 2010, Kenny graduated from the 10 week FBI National Academy, 242nd Session, receiving 17 credit hours and a certificate from the University of Virginia in Criminal Justice.  Additionally Kenny has received the following training and certificates: Sustaining the Intelligence Capacity and Law Enforcement Intelligence “Toolbox” from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) and Michigan State University.  Additionally, Kenny completed the FEMA Incident Command System Train-the-Trainer, International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) SWAT Command and Advanced SWAT Command, IACP Drug Unit Commander, All Hazards Incident Management Team, All Hazards Incident Commander, U.S. Department of Homeland Defense-Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Incident Command, Leadership 2020 and 120 training hours from the Arizona Governmental Training Systems (AGTS) Supervisor’s Academy.

Awards include Gilbert Police Department supervisor of the year, Town of Gilbert employee of the year, twice Town of Gilbert employee of the quarter, four lifesaving awards, three distinguished team citations, police academy exemplary cadet, and police academy honor cadet.  Kenny received the Leadership Award from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for dedication of work with the East Valley DUI Task Force.  From October 4th, 2006 through March 2014, Kenny served as the President of the Senate appointee to the DUI Abatement Oversight Council, a subcommittee to the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission.  Kenny also holds a black belt in Judo and enjoys time volunteering as a coach teaching Judo, wrestling, and grappling. 

Kenny is a native of Arizona and currently lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with his wife, Dawn-Marie, two daughters, and a son.
