Chief Tim Dorn has served his country, state, and community as a law enforcement officer and as a member of the Army National Guard.
He began his law enforcement career as a reserve deputy sheriff with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in 1975. In 1976, Chief Dorn became a police officer with the Gilbert, Arizona Police Department where he served as a patrol officer until 1978, at which time he became a deputy sheriff with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. He served with the Sheriff’s Office for nearly twenty-four years, retiring at the rank of captain. Upon retirement, Chief Dorn returned to the Gilbert Police Department as a commander over the field operations division. Dorn served as Gilbert’s interim chief of police from December 2005 until May 2006, when he was permanently appointed as chief of police.
Chief Dorn’s law enforcement assignments have included uniform patrol, lake patrol, training / administration, tactical operations, special enforcement, traffic, internal affairs, drug enforcement, gang enforcement, criminal investigations and major felony investigations. He has held additional certifications as an underwater search and recovery diver, medic, mounted officer, field training officer, and general instructor.
Chief Dorn served eight years as an enlisted military policeman in the Arizona Army National Guard and Army Reserve. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army National Guard upon graduation from Officer Candidate School (OCS) in 1982. Dorn retired from the Arizona Army National Guard at the rank of colonel on January 31, 2011, following thirty-six years of military service. His last duty assignment was as Brigade Commander, 158th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, and Arizona Army National Guard.
Colonel Dorn’s military command assignments include military police company commander, officer candidate school company commander, civil support team commander, rear area operations center battalion commander, training regiment commander, director of security and intelligence at the joint forces headquarters in Arizona, and maneuver enhancement brigade commander.
In January 2003, Colonel Dorn was called to active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he served until February 2004. He commanded a Rear Area Operations Center, which was attached to the 3rd Infantry Division during ground combat operations in Iraq. The unit was responsible for planning and defending 3 ID’s logistics support assets during the initial invasion and liberation of Iraq. Upon cessation of ground combat operations and the fall of Baghdad, Dorn’s unit was re-assigned to the Coalition Joint Forces Headquarters, Baghdad, where it was responsible for base defense and force protection operations at Camp Victory. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal and Combat Action Badge during ground combat operations.
Chief Dorn’s educational background includes an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Mesa Community College, a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Northern Arizona University, and a graduate of the 175th Session of the FBI National Academy. Military training includes officer candidate school, military police officer basic course, military police officer advanced course, infantry officer advanced course, Combined Arms Staff Skills School, and Command General Staff Officer College. He has also completed the Gilbert Leadership Program, the FEMA All Hazards Incident Management Team, and command and general staff courses. He is currently enrolled in a master of arts program in criminal justice studies.
Awards include Gilbert Police Officer of the Year, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Deputy of the Year, (6) Meritorious Unit Citations, Gilbert Police Lifesaving Award, Gilbert Police Distinguished Service Award, Gilbert Police Meritorious Conduct Award, OCS Distinguished Graduate, OCS Leadership Award, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Action Badge, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, and the Adjutant General’s Medal.
Chief Dorn lives in Queen Creek, Arizona with his wife of over 30 years, Kim. He has a daughter Brandi, son Robert, and two grandchildren.
